NET ZERO and SUTAINABILITY
We are a chartered building surveying practice. Our own footprint is small. The greater part of the difference we make is in the advice we give other people about their buildings, so this page covers both.
Sustainability in the advice we give
Most of the buildings that will be standing in twenty-five years’ time have already been built. Reducing carbon in the built environment is therefore, for the most part, work on existing buildings, which is what we do.
Where it is relevant to the instruction, we consider and raise:
– the energy performance of a building, and what could realistically improve it
– the carbon consequence of repair against replacement, which frequently favours repair
– climate-related risk to a building, including overheating, flooding and the effects of prolonged dry and wet periods on foundations and drainage
– the sustainability of the materials and methods we specify, and what happens to the material we take out
– the regulatory position on energy performance where it affects the value or the lettability of a property
We say so plainly when the sustainable option is also the cheaper or the more durable one, which in building repair it often is. We also say so when it is not, because advice that only ever points one way is not advice.
Our environmental management
Our environmental management system is certified to ISO 14001:2015 by Alcumus ISOQAR under certificate 23778-EMS-001, and is audited annually. It covers the environmental effects of how we run the practice and sets the objectives we manage against.
We work to the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and to our duty of care for waste. Where our work involves samples or materials removed from a site, they are stored safely, described accurately, and transferred only to an authorised carrier for proper disposal.
Reducing our own impact
We measure the emissions arising from running the practice and work to reduce them. For a firm like ours the great majority comes from travel, so that is where the effort goes.
Travel We plan site visits efficiently and combine them where the work allows. We hold meetings remotely where a remote meeting serves the client as well as attending would.
The office We are based at Park Hill, on a tram, bus and rail interchange, with shower and changing facilities so that cycling and running to work are realistic.
Paper We work to digital records and issue our reports digitally. Printing is the exception rather than the routine.
Energy and waste We use energy efficiently in the office, minimise what we throw away, and recycle or reuse equipment and materials wherever we reasonably can.
Electric vehicles
We actively support the move to electric vehicles. There are now six in the business, and we aim for the vehicles we use to be fully electric by 2030.
Review
We review this page and our environmental objectives at least once a year, and whenever our circumstances, the law or RICS guidance change.
